PDX Bicycle & Pedestrian Path Offers Safety and Convenience

Portland International Airport (PDX) visitors and 10,000 employees working at PDX now have one more option to travel to the airport terminal. The PDX Bicycle and Pedestrian Path officially opened on Sept. 22 to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians, offering a safe, convenient alternative to traveling on Airport Way.

Constructed by the Port of Portland (Port), the new multi-use path is located between Frontage Road and the north side of the airport terminal adjacent to Airport Way, which is one of the heaviest traveled roadways in the city. The Port designed the new bike route and path so that pedestrians and cyclists can travel on a safer and more pleasant parallel route. We recognize that as the airport grows, Airport Way will operate in a manner more similar to a freeway (high volumes and speeds) than a normal city arterial street.

The PDX Bicycle and Pedestrian Path augments other improvements connecting the airport with a network of City of Portland and regional bike and walking paths.

Funded by airport parking revenue, the $1.2 million project includes surface repairs to the connecting shared-use Frontage Road.  The project includes new sidewalks along Frontage Road, where they did not exist before, and new bike racks at the terminal building.

Links are provided below to show routes and connectivity between the airport vicinity and the rest of Portland. The Port of Portland's pedestrian and cycling access policy and terminal access study is also included.
