Current Status
New construction projects continue at Terminal 6 and Terminal 4. The projects include technology and security improvements to the facilities that will necessitate alternate vehicle/truck routing during the different phases of construction.
Improvements recently mandated under federal regulations include security modifications to the gate entrances at both facilities. Concurrent with the terminal security improvement project at Terminal 6, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be installing radiation portal monitors. Installation of gate optical character recognition technology at the Terminal 6 container facility will be installed by the Port of Portland.
The Terminal 6 optical character recognition project is scheduled to be completed in mid-December. Currently the out-gate OCR shed has been constructed, and traffic will flow through the shed starting Monday, Oct. 8. The shed will not be activated for container activity data capture. However, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be actively monitoring all truck traffic for radiation emissions via the radiation portal monitors which are in place directly adjacent to the shed. The in-gate OCR shed is due to be built by Oct. 26. The OCR data capture should be in place and active by mid- to late-November.
The Terminal 6 optical character recognition project will complement the existing Tideworks operating system currently deployed. The technology will improve processing time at the gate through automation and provide another layer of security for the facility.
