Send questions or comments concerning the Columbia River Channel Deepening Project to the Port of Portland.

National Marine Fisheries Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Issue Biological Opinions
Deepening the Columbia River channel will not jeopardize threatened and endangered fish and wildlife, according to new biological opinions from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service(FWS) - two federal agencies responsible for the species' protection. The opinions from the NMFS and the FWS are part of the scrutiny to which the $134 million navigation project is subject under the federal Endangered Species Act. The project, which would deepen the 103-mile channel between Astoria and Portland from its current 40-foot depth to 43 feet, is critical to the Pacific Northwest's economy.
